One British Thermal Unit (Btu) is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit.  It takes about 80 Btu to boil a cup of water.  An automobile traveling at 20 miles per hour requires 6,250 Btu's to travel one mile.
